Grandchildren of the Mane Six! Diamond Jubilee

IMPORTANT NOTE: (Don't worry, guys. This isn't a story spoiler because Diamond's biography ISN'T really written in stone, so keep that in mind. This might all happen and it might not. We'll see.)

Meet the first grandbaby of the Mane Six, the daughter of Applejack's son Bismarck and Rarity's daughter Radiance!

Her name is unique as it fits the jewel motif of her mother's family (Rarity, Radiance) and is also the name of a type of apple (common in the Apple family). 


Biography:

It isn't common seeing Unicorns in the Apple family, but if you were to ask Diamond, she would much rather be an Earth Pony. In fact, she has never had much interest in the use of magic. She prefers working with her own hooves and is a do-it-yourself type of pony. Ever since she was little, she would bring home hurt animals with broken wings or damaged paws and help them, showing a compassion and a niche for using available medical supplies. This has given her parents hints that she may one day become a doctor. 

She feels at home visiting Sweet Apple Acres, using it as her base of exploration. She loves the outdoors and goes swimming as often as she can, a far cry from her grandmother Rarity. That being said, Diamond Jubilee is not tomboyish. She's just not extremely girlish. She is a true daddy's girl who loves spending time with and bugging her father Bismarck.

She does have a taste for the more regal, however, and can be surprisingly civil when asked. Just don't expect it to last too long. As a young filly, Diamond often found herself in awe at her mother Radiance's work as a model, admiring her mom for her beauty and grace. Many times she has taken special mom-daughter trips around Equestria and she has loved every minute of them. Often she would spend time backstage, talking to all the other models and being a cute little distraction for them. On the topic of talking, her speech is a surprising one for first-time listeners.

Though she speaks with a country accent (something that makes her father proud), she has acquired an elaborate vocabulary from her mother and grandmother Rarity. She can be a bit wordy at times and often finds herself speaking without thinking, having little filter for her opinions and feelings, which can come off in the wrong way to others. She shares her tongue from Radiance and her toughness from Bismarck. 

All in all, Diamond Jubilee is a real trip.


Design:

Some of you may be wondering, "Shrapnel... why does she look like a younger, freckled version of her mother?" Good question.

If you compare the two, there is enough difference as Diamond has a slightly greenish mane/light blue coat and her mom has a white coat and light blue mane, but I get the confusion. Truth be told, I didn't want her to be a 50-50 mashup between her parents, as genetics do not work like that. 

Not only this, but I wanted her appearance to suit her name, and her original design (with bright red hair) just did not fit with what I wanted. I also wanted her to be an unusual member of the Apple family. Take one look at her and tell me she doesn't look out of place in an Earth Pony family dominated by the colors red, orange, yellow, and green! Because her design is so different, it ends up being unique and it provides her own identity. 

Finally, characters don't need to be flashy to be well-designed and I believe that simple MLP designs work better than complex ones.
